Mettenberger on O'Brien: "He's a football genius."

Posted Apr 10, 2014

LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger spoke about Texans head coach Bill O'Brien after Wednesday's Pro Day in Baton Rouge.

Zach Mettenberger threw at LSU's Pro Day, and did so in front of representatives from all 32 NFL teams. General manager Rick Smith, Director of College Scouting Mike MacCagnan and two additional scouts were in Baton Rouge for the Texans. Mettenberger detailed how his interactions with those front office personnel and head coach Bill O'Brien have gone over the last few months.

"They've been good, I think," Mettenberger said. "Coach O'Brien is a great guy. He's a football genius, and someone that I'd really like to work with. Every interaction I've had with him so far has been great."

Mettenberger completed 64.9% of his passes for 3,082 yards last season with the Tigers. He threw 22 touchdowns and was picked off eight times. He was under center for nine LSU wins in 2013, but tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee during the victory over Arkansas.

"I think he is improving," LSU head coach Les Miles said. "I think they will see that his leg is in the high 90 percentile. He’s back."

Mettenberger and 20 of his former teammates worked out, and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron ran the quarterback and receiver drills. One of Mettenberger's favorite targets, Odell Beckham, was enthusiastic about how well the quarterback looked.

“It’s pretty crazy for him to only be 13 weeks out," Beckham said. "He’s almost fully recovered. He’s throwing the ball and dropping back. It’s amazing on his part, and it says a lot about his character and hard work."

Mettenberger said he's feeling about "85 to 90 percent" healthy, but expects to be "100 percent" by the time rookie camps begin in the middle of May.
