Nick's Notes: 2013 Houston Texans draft

Posted Apr 29, 2013

Quick notes from Texans Insider Nick Scurfield on the Texans' 2013 draft, including breakdowns by position and conference.

The Texans drafted nine players in the 2013 NFL Draft, including Clemson wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in the first round at No. 27 overall.

Quick notes on the Texans’ 2013 draft:

1. Texans draft breakdown by position: WR, SS, OT, OLB, OLB, OT, WR, DT, TE

2. Texans draft breakdown by college conference: ACC, SEC, ACC, SEC, Big East, WAC, Ohio Valley, MAC, Big East

3. The Texans drafted one pair of college teammates (Trevardo Williams and Ryan Griffin, Connecticut) and one pair of high school teammates (D.J. Swearinger and Sam Montgomery, Greenwood (S.C.)).

4. Texans general manager Rick Smith made two trades in the 2013 draft, both on the final day on Saturday. He now has made 10 trades in seven drafts with the Texans. Seven of those have been trades down to acquire more picks.

5. One of the stories of the day on Saturday was the possibility of Brooks Reed moving from outside to inside linebacker after the Texans drafted OLBs in the third and fourth rounds. Coach Gary Kubiak pumped the brakes on that speculation at his and Smith’s post-draft press conference. “Brooks gives us options, but at the same time, Brooks is our starting SAM linebacker,” Kubiak said. ‘We’re not making some decision yesterday or today just because of the draft process and all the sudden we’re moving a player. We have to go through work at OTAs and put our ball team together. Brooks has been an excellent SAM for us, so we expect him to stay there. We’ll have to see what happens with our football team.”

6. The Texans did not draft a quarterback, a telling reinforcement of their stated confidence in Matt Schaub. Smith said the Texans were open to the possibility of drafting one but “never really had a conversation about a quarterback at any particular point.”

7. The Texans had four picks in the sixth round, a team record for picks in a single round. They have made multiple picks in the same round 23 times and three picks in a round four times.
