No QBs for Texans yet

Posted May 9, 2014

Two days, four picks, and no quarterbacks.

Two days, four picks, and no quarterbacks.

Friday night after the third round concluded, Texans general manager Rick Smith and head coach Bill O’Brien met with the media and were asked about the plan under center.

“I think there are still some good quarterbacks on the board,” Smith said.

After selecting South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney Thursday to kick off the Draft, the Texans followed that up on Friday with offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo of UCLA in the second round. Their third round selection was Iowa tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz, and Houston traded a fourth-rounder and fifth-rounder to Philadelphia for a third round pick, which they used on Notre Dame nose tackle Louis Nix.

Smith said Friday night that the Texans were still interested in getting a signal-caller. But they won’t “reach” for a player.

“We’d like to be able to draft quarterbacks and develop young quarterbacks, and that is certainly something that we want to do,” Smith said. “But we will always do that obviously with corresponding value, and so if there is an opportunity for us to do that tomorrow, then we will certainly entertain that.”

The Texans have six picks remaining on Saturday. A compensatory selection in the 4th round (135), a trio of 6th rounders (177, 181, 211) and pair of 7th rounders (216, 256).
