O’Brien: Watson, Watt are “right on schedule”

Posted May 14, 2018

Bill O'Brien discusses the latest on Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt's return to the field.

After devastating season-ending injuries, Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt began the slow process of rehab and recovery.

Together.

The pair appear to be making good progress and are on schedule. O’Brien told NFL Network on Monday that he was “not at all” concerned with Watt returning to form.

“When I see him every day, he’s in here early, stays late,” O’Brien said. “He’s doing a lot of great things both on and off the field, relative to being able to be back and ready to go. Obviously, we are not going to rush any of our injured guys. Those guys are right on schedule. J.J. is doing a great job with his rehab. I see him every single day and you know, I’ve said this time and time again. This is a guy that’s one of the best to ever play the game and I would never bet against J.J. Watt. He is going to be back. He is going to be at full strength and he’s going to help us win a lot of games.”

Watson, working his way back from ACL surgery, is expected to be on the field for organized team activities (OTAs) set to begin next week. His participation will be limited, but all signs have been pointing up for the Texans starting quarterback’s return for the start of the season.

“He’s doing a good job in his rehab,” O’Brien said. “I think he’s on schedule to be able to participate in training camp and we’re excited about that and we’ve had a good four-week session with him here in the offseason program. Looking to continue that and finish off the offseason in a good way.”

The Texans are currently wrapping up Phase 2 of the NFL’s nine-week offseason program. Phase 3, which includes 10 OTAs, begins May 21 at the Houston Methodist Training Center.
