OTAs complete, right tackle among Texans' top concerns

Right tackle is among the Texans’ top concerns coming out of OTAs, which concluded Thursday at the Methodist Training Center.

Derek Newton, who started 14 games at the position last season, and third-round draft pick Brennan Williams, who is expected to challenge Newton for the job, both missed OTAs with knee injuries. That left veteran Ryan Harris and sixth-round pick David Quessenberry as the Texans’ top options at right tackle over the last four weeks.

“Obviously, there are some concerns,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Thursday after the final practice of OTAs. “Up front, the right tackle has got me concerned right now. Guys have missed a lot of time.”

Newton, a seventh-round pick from Arkansas State in 2011, had patellar tendon surgery this offseason for an injury suffered in 2012. Williams, a rookie from North Carolina, tweaked his knee during mini-camp in May. Both should be ready for training camp in late July.

“The guys are all there,” Kubiak said. “The problem is that they’re just not healthy right now. Newton is going to be healthy. He’s going to be ready for camp. Williams is going to be ready for camp. The competition is there, the answers are there, but we have to get them out here. The fact that those guys are in place and everybody is going to be ready to go on the 25th (of July), that makes me feel good.”

Texans running back Arian Foster (calf) and left tackle Duane Brown (ankle) suffered minor injuries during OTAs, but both will be healthy in plenty of time for camp. The Texans also are awaiting the return of linebacker Brian Cushing from a torn ACL and safety Ed Reed from offseason hip surgery.

“We got out of this thing healthy,” Kubiak said. “All these guys that have missed a little time will be back. We’ll finish up next week (at mini-camp) with just the young guys.”
