One critical component to O-line success

Posted Feb 28, 2018

GM Brian Gaine explained one of the key factors in a successful offensive line.

The Texans offensive line was fluid in 2017.

There were seven different starting combinations throughout the season. Five different players got a start at left tackle. Only left guard Xavier Su'a-Filo and right tackle Breno Giacomini started every single game at their respective positons.

Getting continuity up front is a priority for new general manager Brian Gaine.

“That’s very important," Gaine said during a Wednesday press conference at the Combine in Indianapolis. "I think any offensive line coach or offensive coordinator would tell you that that’s a critical part to building an offensive line unit."

Chris Clark started eight games at left tackle, and is an unrestricted free agent along with Su'a-Filo and Giacomini. Gaine said getting continuity on the line will happen through a process that could include free agency, the Draft, or re-signing players currently on the roster.

"That’s something that we’re working on to address both in-house and externally as it relates to options both either through free agency and/or the draft, but continuity is critically important I think to the success of any offensive line," Gaine said.

Center Nick Martin started the first 14 contests of the year before exiting with a leg injury. He's expected to be back and ready for Week 1 of the 2018 season.

Gaine and the Texans are in Indianapolis for the next six days to evaluate potential dratees at the Combine.
