Players moving forward

Posted Dec 30, 2013

Players discuss moving forward this offseason with all the upcoming changes and uncertainty.

Texans players are already looking towards the future and next season. On Monday morning, the first day of their offseason, players cleaned out their lockers and completed their checkout process. When they return, it will be to a new head coach and different coaching staff.

“It’s something that, me personally, I’ve never been through before in my career and a lot of these guys on the team haven’t been through,” Chris Myers said. “So we’re going to have to take it step-by-step and day-by-day and go from there. I’m looking forward to a fresh start.”

After eight seasons under Gary Kubiak, players have mixed emotions about the upcoming changes. Ben Jones plans to stay in Houston this offseason and train while he waits.

“Right now, you’ve just got to be able to control what you can control and that’s just trying to get better as a player,” Ben Jones said Monday. “We’ll go out there and try to get better this offseason, get in better shape because you don’t know. You’re out there and everybody’s competing for their spot.”

After a disappointing 2-14 finish, Houston earned the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. In the meantime, the search for the third head coach in franchise history continues. Players are ready to move on and remove themselves from the season that many referred to as “a nightmare.”

“I’m sure that there are a lot of guys like me that are extremely ready to move on, get to work in the offseason and put this behind us and never let anything like this happen again,” J.J. Watt said after Sunday’s 16-10 loss at Tennessee. “Yeah, after this I am very excited about the future.”
