Rookie WR DeVier Posey suffers torn Achilles

Posted Jan 14, 2013

Texans WR DeVier Posey's promising rookie season ended with a torn left Achilles tendon in Sunday's playoff loss at New England.

FOXBORO – Rookie wide receiver DeVier Posey had an unhappy ending to a promising season, tearing his left Achilles tendon in the fourth quarter of the Texans’ Divisional Playoff loss at New England on Sunday.

Posey, a third-round draft pick from Ohio State, was injured with 6:13 remaining on a quarterback draw by Matt Schaub on third-and-goal from the two-yard line. He sat in the end zone for several minutes before being carted off the field. After the game, he left the Texans’ locker room on crutches with a boot on his left leg.

“I thought somebody in the stands threw a rock or a bottle at me or something,” Posey said. “It just felt like somebody shot me. I’d never felt anything like it before.”

Posey caught a 25-yard touchdown pass on the series before he was injured. He tipped the ball to himself, then caught it on his chest as he was lying on his back in the end zone. The play initially was ruled incomplete but was overturned after a challengthe by Texans coach Gary Kubiak.

“I should’ve caught it the first time, so I didn’t have to go through all that extra stuff,” Posey said, mustering up a smile as he leaned on his crutches.

Posey had three catches for 47 yards on Sunday. After missing 10 games as a senior at Ohio State because of NCAA suspensions, he earned more and more playing time in the latter part of his rookie season with the Texans.

Posey was Inactive for the first five games and didn’t have a catch until Week 14 at New England. He finished the season with six catches for 87 yards, showing a glimpse at the size, speed and playmaking ability that could help him develop into a starter.

“It lets me know the potential that I had at this level,” Posey said. “I just want to come back stronger than ever and be a contributor here.

“I felt like I had to get there as a player mentally, and I don’t know, I guess it just took me a little while to get there. When I got there, they gained more confidence in me. Hopefully, I come back and that confidence is still there.”
