Rookies serenade Gary Kubiak in practice

After Thursday morning’s rainy practice, the Houston Texans rookies gathered around on the practice field and serenaded their head coach. Quarterback Matt Schaub organized the “Happy Birthday” rendition for head coach Gary Kubiak who turned 52.

“I’ve been celebrating my birthday in training camp as a player and a coach for a long, long time,” Kubiak said.

Entering his eighth season as the Texans head coach, Kubiak enjoyed the singing which capped off the last training camp practice of 2013.

“That actually was the most creative song they’ve had in a while,” Kubiak joked of the rookies. “It had a beat to it. It wasn’t a traditional birthday song.”

Antonio Smith applauded the rookie effort, saying that they could make a decent choir with the tenors, altos, and soprano talent on the team.

“They sound magnificent,” Smith said. “They got all into it. They didn’t even get into it that good on their rookie show. They wanted to impress the head coach. They really sang it to him.”

Kubiak was named the second head coach of the Houston Texans on January 26, 2006. Under Kubiak, the Texans have accumulated 61 wins (including postseason), produced the five best seasons in franchise history, and earned two consecutive AFC South division championships.
