Ryan Griffin enjoying new offense

Posted Jul 27, 2014

Tight end Ryan Griffin discusses what he enjoys most about Bill O'Brien's offense.

What does tight end Ryan Griffin love most about the new Texans offense?

The multiplicity.

“We are all over the field," Griffin said after practice on Sunday. "We can be lined up six yards outside of the numbers or we can be in line as a fullback. I love lining up all around the field.”

The multi-faced approach to player personnel is all a part of the Texans new motto, “the more you can do.”

Under head coach Bill O’Brien, the Texan will have a game-plan offense that evolves from week-to-week depending on the opponent so players are expected to be versatile. In his system, tight ends have one of the toughest positions to learn on this offense, other than quarterback, according to O’Brien.

Griffin agrees.

“Absolutely, as a tight end you have to know everything that the quarterback knows so you can be on the same page," Griffin said. "You’ve got to know protections, routes, obviously, and coverages. You got to know it all and the faster you learn it all, the game slows down for you.”

The second-year tight end doesn’t have to look far for guidance. He has already formed a bond with the Texans tight ends coach John Perry who has ties to Griffin’s home state of New Hampshire. Perry was a star athlete and coached for the UNH Wildcats. Griffin and Perry often talk about their mutual acquaintances from back home.

“I actually played against his brother," Griffin said. "He coached high school basketball. We know a lot of the same people so it’s good to see some familiar faces from back home.”

Griffin, who started eight games as a rookie, had 19 receptions for 244 yards and one touchdown in 2013. Since his first training camp last year, he has adjusted to the heat and used the offseason to improve his strength and improve his mechanics.

“You know, I worked on it all," Griffin said, laughing. "Trying to get stronger and trying to get my footwork right in the run game. You can’t really focus on one area when your whole game needs work.”
