Scout's Take: Maccagnan on S D.J. Swearinger

Posted May 26, 2013

Director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan discusses safety D.J. Swearinger, the Texans' second-round draft pick from South Carolina.

Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan reviewed the 2013 NFL Draft with Texans insider Nick Scurfield. In this “Scout’s Take” series, we’ll share his thoughts on each of the Texans’ nine draft picks, from tight end Ryan Griffin in the sixth round to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in the first.

S D.J. Swearinger – (2nd round, 57th overall)
5-10, 208 – South Carolina – Greenwood (S.C.) HS

Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan
“He’s a very physical, hard-hitting player when you watch him on the college tape. He’s a good athlete for the position, has good quickness, speed and overall range. He’s an extremely instinctive player, both versus the run and in coverage. He’s definitely a strong physical presence over the middle, which we really liked. When it’s all said and done, he’s a very well-rounded player. When we went to the Combine, he performed well from an athletic standpoint. He may not have necessarily run the fastest 40 out there, but when you watch him on tape, he really plays fast, more so due to his instincts, the ability to anticipate and be in the right position at the right time… Every play is not necessarily a highlight, but really, every game you put on, there were numerous occasions where he is just a very, very aggressive, physical player. Plays the game very clean, very hard, but definitely is a contact-oriented player. To me, that really sort of jumped off the tape when you watched him. Almost every game you looked at, there was an opportunity where he really made a very physical, aggressive tackle. He has a definite knockback ability when you watch him.”
