Special teams practice under Ligashesky

Posted Dec 11, 2013

Newly promoted special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky makes changes in Wednesday's practice and gets vote of confidence from Wade Phillips.

Interim head coach Wade Phillips gave a vote of confidence to newly promoted special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky. After Wednesday’s practice, Phillips discussed the changes that Ligashesky, who is known as ‘Lig’ to the team, implemented on special teams.

“Lig is a very detailed guy,”Phillips said. “If you ask the players, they really like what he’s done so far. As far as teaching, I like the way he teaches. I thought he communicated really well today with the players and his enthusiasm and that kind of thing will benefit us.”

According to Phillips, it’s not just what Ligahesky says but how he says it.

“He’s loud,” Phillips said. “That’s what you need in a special teams coach. They’ve got to coach a bunch of guys at one time. The other guys that are out still have to hear him. He does a good job with that but he’s very detailed, very detailed and the players, I think, will know what they’re supposed to do.”

This week Phillips also made some changes that affected special teams. As the interim head coach for the remainder of the season, Phillips has altered practices to better simulate games.

“We’ve made it more of a game situation,” Phillips said. “I can go into all of the changes, but some of them are subtle. Some of them are more, a lot different than they’ve done before. We put the special teams in during practice rather than before practice or after practice. I wanted to make it a game-type situation where they go offense, then they go defense, then they go special teams, then they have to come back out and do those things again. That’s part of what we did.”
