Stark differences at home, on road for 2018 foes

Posted Jan 10, 2018

The home and road records for the Texans 2018 opponents are very different.

The Houston Texans 2018 home opponents weren't successful on the road this year.

Their 2018 road opponents, however, were.

We know who Houston will play in the 2018 regular season, and will find out when in mid-April when the NFL releases the schedule.

In looking at the overall, home, and road records of next year's foes, a few things stood out.

Just one team will come to NRG Stadium with a 2017 road record above .500: the Cowboys. Dallas was 6-2 last season away from AT&T Stadium, and just 3-5 at home. The Jaguars were the only other team that didn't have a sub-.500 road record last season, as Jacksonville was 4-4 away from home. One of the Jaguars' four road triumphs came at Houston in Week 1.

Altogether, the eight teams the Texans welcome to NRG Stadium next year went a combined 20-44 on the road in 2017, and 50-78 overall. If you take away Dallas and Jacksonville, the other six opponents went a combined 10-38 on the road last season.

In comparison, last year's home opponents had a combined 2016 road record of 24-40. 2016's foes went 27-37 on the road in 2015. The year before that, the 2014 combined road record was 22-42.

Three of their home opponents went to the playoffs this season.

2018 NRG STADIUM OPPONENTS
DIVISION TEAM 2017 RECORD  2017 ROAD RECORD
AFC SOUTH  Jaguars     10-6           4-4
Titans       9-7           3-5
Colts       4-12           1-7
AFC EAST Bills       9-7           3-5
Dolphins       6-10            2-6
AFC NORTH Browns       0-16           0-8
NFC EAST Cowboys       9-7           6-2
Giants       3-13           1-7
TOTAL     50-78         20-44

It was a much different tale, though, for the 2018 road opponents at home last year. Every squad, save for the Colts, was at least .500 at home in 2017, with five of the eight posting winning records. Philadelphia was the best, with a 7-1 mark at Lincoln Financial Field. The Jaguars, Titans and Patriots, meanwhile, all sported 6-2 records in their respective home stadiums. Washington was 5-3 at FedExField last year. The Jets and Broncos were both 4-4 in 2017.

Overall, the combined record of the Texans' road opponents was 66-62, and 41-23 at home. Four went to the playoffs.

In 2017, the Texans' road foes were 35-28-1 at home in 2016. The year before, they were 36-28 at home in 2015. The 2015 road opponents sported a 31-32-1 home mark in 2014. The .641 winning percentage at home of the 2018 road opponents is the best mark over the last four seasons.
