T.J. Yates, Case Keenum sharp again in victory

Posted Aug 17, 2013

Quarterbacks T.J. Yates and Case Keenum were crisp during Saturday night's 24-17 win over the Dolphins.

Houston triumphed by a 24-17 margin Saturday night over the Dolphins, and each of the first three signal callers tossed touchdown passes in the win. Case Keenum was first off the bench behind starter Matt Schaub, this week. In the win over the Vikings a week ago, Yates was first off the bench. According to head coach Gary Kubiak, each player is making it tough for him to make a decision on who will be Schaub’s backup.

“We’ve been throwing the ball around pretty good,” Kubiak said. “Our quarterbacks have been pretty solid. T.J. is solid again, and Case makes some really nice throws in there.”

Keenum entered the game with 43 second remaining in the first quarter, and finished 11-of-18 for 150 yards and a touchdown. The scoring strike was a 38-yarder to wide receiver Lestar Jean, and it came on Keenum’s second drive. But as he’s done all along, the second-year signal caller from the University of Houston stayed low-key after the victory.

“My job is to go out there and play,” Keenum said. “I think T.J. played really well. He made the offense play pretty well tonight. I think we are making the team better, both of us.”

Yates was effective as well, completing seven of his nine passes for 84 yards and a third quarter 33-yard touchdown pass to tight end Garrett Graham. He finished with a game-best quarterback rating of 142.6. The challenge from Keenum, he said, has been fun.

“You know in the games you have to go out there and treat it like a competition,” Yates said. “It makes it a lot more fun. When you go out there, you know you have to perform.”

The competition hasn’t been lost on any of their teammates, especially Schaub. The veteran starter is enjoying what he’s seen from Yates and Keenum.

“It’s fun watching those guys grow and learn,” Schaub said. “How they go and take things from the practice field, from the meeting room and then come out here and display it in the games.”
