Tajh Boyd focusing on footwork, consistency

Posted Feb 3, 2014

A 1-on-1 during Senior Bowl week in Mobile revealed Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd's favorite players, where he needs to improve and more.

*HoustonTexans.com was in Mobile for Senior Bowl week, and caught up with a slew of NFL Hopefuls. Drew Dougherty went 1-on-1 with Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd.

A starter in 2011, 2012 and 2013, Tajh Boyd led the Tigers to double-digit victories in each of those three seasons. A 10-win campaign as a sophomore was followed by 11-win autumns the last two years.

Boyd (6-1, 222) is projected by many to be a second-day selection. When we spoke with him on the Monday night of Senior Bowl week, he detailed what he'll work on most in between now and the NFL Draft.

“Just consistency with the footwork," Boyd said. "I think that’s what separates quarterbacks: learning how to throw the ball on a certain level, on certain angles. I think I can change my platform to throw on just about any angle."

Boyd went on to list Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson as quarterbacks he admires. In explaining why, he echoed what he's wanting to improve upon the most.

"It’s just their consistency and their footwork, understanding their offenses and just making the best reads possible," Boyd said. "It’s something I’ve got to continue to get accustomed to, and I’m just looking forward to the process."

Boyd also had a unique perspective on his former Clemson teammate, DeAndre Hopkins. The wideout nickamed 'Nuk' was a prolific pass-catcher in college, and finished with 802 receiving yards as a rookie with the Texans in 2013. Boyd, who saw firsthand as Hopkins caught 27 touchdowns and finished with more than 3,000 yards receiving at Clemson, wasn't surprised by the early NFL success of his former teammate.

"Not at all," Boyd said. "Nuk is a special kid. A special player. Everything he’s doing at that level is what I expected him to do."

Boyd even joked that Hopkins "needs to get the ball a little bit more, but that’s up to the next quarterback."

In the Senior Bowl game, Boyd completed seven-of-16 passes for 31 yards, and was picked off once.
