Teddy Bridgewater focused on gaining weight

Posted Feb 23, 2014

The 6-foot-2 Louisville quarterback arrived in Indianapolis and surprised some with his official weigh-in at the NFL Combine.

Teddy Bridgewater has clearly heard the talk about his size. The 6-foot-2 Louisville quarterback arrived in Indianapolis and surprised some with his official weigh-in at 214 pounds from the NFL Combine.

“I put on about nine pounds," Bridgewater said during Friday's Combine press conference. "I was 205 pounds when I finished the season at the University of Louisville. I’ve been working hard with my eating habits, my weight room lifting and everything.”

Bridgewater’s weight was as high as 222 pounds while playing at Lousiville but an oral procedure during his sophomore season caused him to lose a significant amount of weight. His jaw was broken in order to correct an overbite and straighten his teeth.

"I couldn’t eat for two months, and that was a period when I lost most of my weight," Bridgewater said. "So I just want to get back to that range, 220, 225 range, and just feel good.”

Teams have not spoken with him about an ideal weight, according to Bridgewater but doesn’t have concerns about his ability to add bulk. With proper eating habits, he said he was confident he could sustain the wear and tear of an NFL season.

“Yes, no doubt,” Bridgewater said. “I just feel that to play this position you have to have durability, and I just want to prove that I can put on that weight and I am one of those guys who can last a full NFL season.”
