Texans, Reliant give back at Houston Food Bank

Posted Jun 20, 2012

The Texans joined forces with Reliant and helped prepare more than 16,000 meals Tuesday at the Houston Food Bank.

The Houston Texans organization partnered with Reliant for the seventh year in a row for a “Day of Caring” on Tuesday.

The two joined forces by sending a combined 200 volunteers to the Houston Food Bank, where they stuffed boxes to prepare meals for the hungry around town.

“It’s always great to help out when you can,” wide receiver LeStar Jean said. “I just hope this food goes somewhere and helps someone get a meal.”

Jean’s hope came true, as 16,883 meals were prepared.

“This is a blast,” long snapper Jon Weeks said. “This is a great time. It’s awesome to get out here and help in any way that we can. We’re in a position to give back, and that’s the most fulfilling feeling.”

Jean, Weeks, nose tackle Earl Mitchell and left guard Wade Smith teamed up with six Houston Texans Cheerleaders and more than 50 front office workers from the franchise and Reliant in what has become an annual exciting venture.

The day was extra special for Mitchell, who was born and raised in Houston.

“Every opportunity I get I try to help out, because this is my hometown,” Mitchell said. “It means a lot to me.”

For Smith, it was a busy day, as he spent his afternoon across town reading to children at a local library. He stuffed the boxes with a smile, and said he enjoyed his time at the Houston Food Bank with his teammates and coworkers.

“Any time you can give back to the kids, and the people of the community, that’s one thing that I know the Houston Texans pride themselves on is giving back to the community,” Smith said. “I’m just glad to be a part of it.”
