Texans acquire fullback Tyler Clutts from Bears

Posted Aug 31, 2012

The Texans made a trade Friday, obtaining fullback Tyler Clutts from Chicago in exchange for corner Sherrick McManis.

The Texans traded cornerback Sherrick McManis to the Chicago Bears for fullback Tyler Clutts.

Clutts (6-2, 260), 27, will back up James Casey. The Texans released Moran Norris on Friday, which would have left them without a traditional lead-blocking fullback if they had not traded for Clutts.

Clutts played in all 16 games for the Bears last season, starting eight. He helped Matt Forte rush for 997 yards (4.9 per carry) in just 12 games. He also caught eight passes for 48 yards and was a core special teams player. A native of Clovis, Calif., Clutts played defensive end at Fresno State before spending three years in the UFL, AFL and CFL. He entered the NFL late in the 2010 season on the practice squad of the Cleveland Browns.

McManis, 24, played in 23 games in two seasons with the Texans. A fifth-round draft pick from Northwestern in 2010, he was primarily a special teams contributor.

The Texans kept six cornerbacks on their 53-man roster: Johnathan Joseph, Kareem Jackson, Brice McCain, Brandon Harris, Alan Ball and Roc Carmicheal.
