The Texans selected nine players in the 2013 NFL Draft, starting with Clemson wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in the first round on Thursday and ending with four picks in the sixth round on Saturday.

South Carolina safety D.J. Swearinger (second round), North Carolina tackle Brennan Williams (third) and LSU outside linebacker Sam Montgomery (third) are the other headliners in a class that includes five offensive players and four defensive players.

“I love the class,” Texans general manager and executive vice president Rick Smith said. “I really do, as you look at it from top to bottom. I think we added two players in the first and second round and even in the third round… there’s an element mental toughness, of aggressiveness with all three of those players."

Smith made two trades in the draft, both on Saturday. He traded the Texans’ fifth-round pick at No. 160 overall to the St. Louis Rams for two sixth-round picks (184 and 198). He then sent the 184th pick with the Texans’ seventh-round pick (233) to the Oakland Raiders to move up to 176 and draft San Jose State tackle David Quessenberry.

Fourth-round draft pick Trevardo Williams (124), an outside linebacker from Connecticut, was the Texans’ first pick of the final day. Like Montgomery, he will make the transition from defensive end in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defense.

Quessenberry was the Texans’ first of four picks in the sixth round. Their final three picks were Jacksonville State wide receiver Alan Bonner (195), Bowling Green defensive tackle Chris Jones (198) and UConn tight end Ryan Griffin (201).

“I like the class all the way through," Smith said. "I think each of them adds a dynamic to our football team, and we’re pleased with the process and how it unfolded.”
