The Texans begin their rookie mini-camp on Friday morning at the Methodist Training Center, their practice facility across the street from Reliant Stadium.

They will have five practices in three days – two on Friday, two on Saturday and one on Sunday. Rookies and eligible first-year Texans players will participate along with a group of players invited for tryouts.

“I really just want to see where they’re at,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “We’ve got our draft choices and obviously want to see where they’re at. All the free agents that we signed, catching them up a little bit to speed. And then we’ve got a lot of guys from a tryout basis that’ll have a chance to be signed, depending on how we do this weekend. I’m looking forward to it.”

Among the players the Texans will get a first look at on the field are wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, their first-round draft pick out of Clemson, and safety D.J. Swearinger, their second-round pick out of South Carolina.

“It’s exciting,” Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said. “We’ve seen them on tape, we’ve interviewed a lot of them, but to see them out on the field, I think it’s gonna be exciting to see those guys come in here and work this weekend and just see what they can do. I think we’ve got a really good class, so we’ll see.”

After the mini-camp, rookies will enter the Texans’ offseason conditioning program, which began on April 15. OTAs (organized team activities) begin on May 20.

Quarterback Case Keenum and tight end Phillip Supernaw are among the first-year Texans players eligible to participate this weekend.
