On your mark, get set, GO.

The Houston Texans Cheerleaders and Texans Ambassador J.J. Moses celebrated the opening of Patrick Henry Middle School’s new outdoor track in the best way possible: a student vs. teacher track meet.

As a part of the team’s Play 60 efforts, Patrick Henry received a $10,000 grant from the Houston Texans Foundation to install a 400 meter cinder track to be used for all their sporting activities and other recreational activities. The new facility will assist in encouraging the NFL’s initiative of “60 minutes of daily physical activity” for kids. The track will also be accessible for those in the community which serves over 55,000 residents within a 2-mile radius of the school.

Students and teachers had a blast competing in the 100 meter dash, 50 meter dash, 400 meter relay and 100 meter relay.  PHMS Principal Sarah Stafford joined in on the fun, anxious to break in the new track with the rest of her staff.

“This is a great addition to our school,” Stafford said. “We’re very thankful to the Houston Texans, and we’ll definitely utilize this track to its fullest. We place high importance on physical activity as well as education, so this is a wonderful enhancement to our campus.”

The ever-entertaining Moses got the crowd of middle schoolers excited by asking interactive questions, taking selfies with students and calling one youngster up to do “the worm”.

“It’s always fun to come out here and interact with young fans,” Moses said. “I think what the Texans are doing is great. Donating $10,000 and providing a means where kids can stay active and have fun is a huge deal.”

The races between instructor and pupil got quite competitive, and Moses was relieved he didn’t have to suit up for a sprint.

“I’m glad I’m 34 years old and retired,” he laughed. “I hung up my cleats long ago.”

The Texans awarded grants to five other organizations:

• JP Henderson Elementary: Awarded $4,000 to purchase new equipment such as hula hoops, jump ropes, badminton and exercise mats.
• Manford Williams Elementary: Awarded $6,000 to purchase Nike Kinect and Zumba Kids software, footballs, and Zumba Kids
• Sutton Elementary: Awarded $10,000 to purchase heart monitors, pedometers, yoga mats, dumb bells and other equipment.
• Garden Oaks Elementary: Awarded $10,000 hurdles, footballs, Nintendo Wii, bouncing ball platform, etc.
• Patrick Henry Middle School: Awarded $10,000 to install a cinder track

Grant process was launched in September 2013; Recipients were recognized at the Play 60 game laduring the 2013 season.
