Texans feel "love" in agreement with Tyrann Mathieu

Posted Mar 17, 2018

Head coach Bill O'Brien and GM Brian Gaine are excited about adding Tyran Mathieu to the Texans defense.

A busy week of free agent acquisitions came to a crescendo Friday night for the Texans when they agreed to terms with Tyrann Mathieu.

The safety, who's nickname is "Honey Badger", was available after five seasons in Arizona. On Saturday morning, general manager Brian Gaine and head coach Bill O'Brien both spoke with John McClain of the Houston Chronicle and Mark Berman of KRIV/Fox-26

"I feel very positive about this acquisition," Gaine said. "It's a position of need for us, and signing Tyrann improves our secondary."

Adding the 2015 First-Team All-Pro safety was a big plus, in the eyes of O'Brien.

"He's a great competitor, and he's very versatile," O'Brien said. "That's what attracted us to him. When you watch him play and get to know him a little, it's obvious how much he loves football. He has a real passion for the game. He loves to talk about football. That was one of the things that stood out to me."

Mathieu will take a physical and sign with the team on Monday at NRG Stadium.
