Texans have productive day with Patriots

Posted Aug 15, 2017

Head coach Bill O’Brien was pleased with what his team accomplished in the nearly three-hour practice in full pads.

The Texans and Patriots held their first of two joint practices at The Greenbrier on Tuesday. Head coach Bill O’Brien was pleased with what his team accomplished in the nearly three-hour practice in full pads.

“It was good," O'Brien said Tuesday. "We got a lot of good work done today. Ran a bunch of plays, lot of different situations. I just really believe in the joint practices, especially this time of year when you’re developing your team and you’re working on fundamentals. It’s really a good thing.”

Both teams have similar practice styles and tempo which facilitated a smooth day of drills, according to O’Brien. During team drills, Tom Savage and Deshaun Watson led their offenses down the field to score game-winning field goals during a two-minute drill in practice. The Texan defense, led by J.J. Watt, practiced against Tom Brady and often got pressure on the five-time Super Bowl winning quarterback.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” Watt said. “It gives you great film is what it does. It gives us a chance to go in – tonight we’ll watch the film, we’ll learn. Especially for the young guys, getting a chance to go against another team. They’ve been going against the same guys every day. Getting a chance to go against another team – now they have this on film, get to see what they did and really, what’s cool about it, is you get to go out tomorrow and try and correct what you did wrong today. So, it’s really good stuff for us and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

The Texans and Patriots will hold another joint practice Wednesday at The Greenbrier prior to Saturday's preseason game at NRG Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on ABC-13 and SportsRadio 610.
