Texans haven't narrowed list at top of Draft

Posted Feb 21, 2014

General manager Rick Smith and head coach Bill O'Brien spoke about what the Texans may or may not do in the Draft.

Nobody knows who the Texans will take at first overall in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Not the fans. Not the media. Not even Texans general manager Rick Smith.

"It’s not narrowed down," Smith said on Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine. "We don’t have that kind of focus just yet.”

Smith kept his proverbial cards close to the vest, and didn't shed any light on who Houston will select. Further, he said the Texans might even move back, via trade.

“We’re open to all possibilities," Smith said. "I think if you do that, you give yourself the right chance to manage the process the right way.”

Bill O'Brien's public comments on Friday dovetailed with Smith's. The Draft doesn't begin until the night of May 8, and the new head coach stressed how early in the evaluation process they are.

"It’s not something that you develop your thoughts right away overnight," O'Brien said. "These are a lot of discussions, meetings, communication between Rick and myself, the coaching staff, Rick’s staff of scouts and all those things that go in to this decision and that is what we are in the process of doing.”

Smith and O'Brien spoke on Friday afternoon, shortly after Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel met with the media.
