Texans receive 2 compensatory picks in 2013 draft

Posted Mar 19, 2013

The Texans have received two compensatory picks in the 2013 NFL Draft, including a third-rounder that was the highest compensatory pick awarded to any team.

The Texans have received two compensatory picks in the 2013 NFL Draft, including a third-rounder that was the highest compensatory pick awarded to any team.

The Texans’ two compensatory selections are the 33rd pick in the third (95th overall) and sixth (201st overall) rounds. They now have four picks in the top 95 of the draft at 27, 57, 89 and 95 overall.

Compensatory picks are awarded based on the previous year in free agency. A team losing more or better free agents – as determined by an NFL formula that considers salary, playing time and postseason honors – than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory picks at the end of Rounds 3-7.

The Texans lost Mario Williams, Mike Brisiel, Joel Dreessen and Jason Allen in free agency in 2012. Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 draft, signed a six-year, $100 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. The Texans also signed a few free agents, including Bradie James and Donnie Jones.

Free agents the Texans lost this year including Glover Quin, Connor Barwin and James Casey did not factor into the compensatory selections awarded Monday. Those players, and any others the Texans may lose in the next couple of weeks, will potentially result in compensatory picks in 2014.
