Texans select CB Andre Hal

Posted May 10, 2014

The Texans selected Vanderbilt cornerback Andre Hal with their first pick of the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

The Texans selected Vanderbilt cornerback Andre Hal with their first pick of the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Hal, 5-foot-10 and 188 pounds, was graduated Friday with a degree with a degree in sociology.

The Port Allen, Louisiana native spoke with Texans coaches last week and is looking forward to playing behind No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney.

“I know you all just drafted Jadeveon Clowney so I'd love to be behind him and get interceptions off of him," Hal said in a conference call Saturday.

Hal's skillset as a corner and his ability to contribute on special teams as a kick returner make him the type of versatile player that head coach Bill O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith have been selecting in this year's draft. Hal considers himself a student of the gamel.

"I study technique quite a bit," Hal said. "As a kid, I study Champ Bailey and I watch him and how he played and his attention to detail. I feel like I'm a technician of the game."

Hal played in 50 games during his collegiate career, logging 133 tackles, six interceptions, and 37 passes defensed. Hal was named Second Team All-SEC by both league head coaches and the Associated Press.

During his senior season, Hal started 11 games and was voted defensive co-captain. He finished the 2013 season with 49 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery. He led the SEC with 18 passes defensed and earned himself a postseason invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
