Texans target training camp for Ed Reed after hip surgery

Posted May 6, 2013

The Texans think safety Ed Reed will return for training camp after having hip surgery last week. Bob McNair, Gary Kubiak and Wade Phillips discussed it on Monday.

The Texans expect Ed Reed to be able to participate in training camp after having hip surgery last week.

Multiple media outlets reported last week that Reed, 34, had arthroscopic surgery to repair a labral tear in his hip.

“I think this was a minor procedure, and he'll be ready once training camp starts, maybe the middle,” Texans chairman and CEO Bob McNair said Monday at the team’s annual Charity Golf Classic. “But he doesn’t need as much as the other guys, so I think he’ll be OK.”

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Reed will rehab his hip for two more weeks before joining the team in Houston. Reed will not participate in Texans OTAs, which begin May 20, or mini-camp from June 11-13.

“He’s on his way to getting healthy now,” Kubiak said. “It’s something that it was bothering him (and) we needed to get it done, make sure we get him ready to go. One of those deals where you don't wait; you just do the right thing.”

The Texans signed Reed as an unrestricted free agent on March 22. The nine-time Pro Bowler and 2004 NFL Defensive Player of the Year with the Baltimore Ravens had major hip surgery in 2010 and started that season on the Physically Unable to Perform List, missing six games. He has not missed a game since then and is not expected to miss any as a result of this surgery.

“We didn't expect it, but it started bothering him,” Kubiak said. “He has had this issue on the other side before, so once it started happening, that's when we got aggressive in what we needed to do to get him ready to play this season.

“There’s no push here. We know what Ed Reed can do; that’s why we brought him here. The hope is that we get him ready for training camp, but at the same time, we’re going to do the right thing. I would say give us a couple weeks. We’ll get him back in town, get him back from the rehab he’s going through right now; we’ll find out exactly where we’re at. But obviously, that’s (training camp) the target date for us.”

Texans training camp begins on July 26.

“Anytime a guy’s operated on, you’re concerned, especially at this time of year,” Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said. “If it’d have been right after the season, it’d have been different. So there's a little concern, but the good thing about (Reed), he’s experienced it before. He’s an experienced guy. You have no problem with him studying or knowing what you’re doing. He’s going to spend all the time it takes off the field to get ready. So I think Ed’ll be ready when it’s time.”
