Texans to attend Houston firefighter memorial at Reliant

Posted Jun 4, 2013

The entire Texans team will attend Wednesday's public memorial service at Reliant Stadium for the four fallen Houston firefighters.

The entire Texans team will attend Wednesday's public memorial service at Reliant Stadium for the four Houston firefighters who were killed in a motel fire last week.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak moved the team's Wednesday OTAs practice from 11:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. The memorial starts at 10.

"It's very important to us," Kubiak said. "It means a lot to us to be there and show our support for the families and to the community."

The deadly fire took place on Friday afternoon in Southwest Houston. Four firefighters died while an additional 14 were hospitalized, marking the single deadliest day in the history of the Houston Fire Department.

The firefighters who lost their lives were Captain EMT Matthew Renaud, 35, of Station 51; Firefighter EMT Robert Garner, 29, of Station 68; Probationary Firefighter Anne Sullivan, 24, of Station 68; and Engineer Operator EMT Robert Bebee, 41, of Station 51.

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub said it's important for he and his teammates to be at the service on Wednesday.

"It’s something that as players, we talked with the coaches and just tried to work it out when we found out it was going to take place in our building tomorrow," Schaub said. "It’s important for us, being members of this community, to be a part of that community and when something like this happens, we all rally around each other as citizens.”
