Texans to decide on starting QB later in week

Posted Dec 24, 2013

Quarterback Case Keenum's right thumb injury didn't prevent him from taking part in a walkthrough with the Texans on Tuesday morning.

Quarterback Case Keenum practiced with the Texans on Tuesday inside the Houston Methodist Training Center. It was the first time the second-year signal caller practiced since spraining his right thumb in the loss at Indianapolis.

"We actually alternated the two quarterbacks," interim head coach Wade Phillips said of Keenum and Matt Schaub. "It was actually a walkthrough and they really weren't throwing the ball that much today."

Schaub started under center on Sunday against the Broncos. T.J. Yates, who's logged minutes as a reserve in three different contests this season, was active and the backup against Denver.

"I think Thursday when we start throwing the ball around, and certainly see how Case is on Friday after throwing the ball, we'll get a better idea," Phillips said.

Keenum has thrown for nine touchdowns and six interceptions in 2013, and has a quarterback rating of 78.2.

Phillips also said that Yates is not an option to start "right now", because Keenum and Schaub have both taken the lion's share of snaps in 2013.

"Both the guys have played a whole lot," Phillips said. "Going into the last game, they give us the best opportunity."
