Texans to give QB Collin Klein a look in rookie mini-camp

Posted May 2, 2013

The most recognizable name on the Texans' list of reported undrafted free agent signings is Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein.

The Texans have not officially announced their list of undrafted free agents, but the most recognizable name on the list of their reported signings is Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein.

Klein finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting last season. He had a 21-5 record in two seasons as a starter with 29 passing touchdowns and 50 rushing touchdowns, including an FBS-record 27 rushing touchdowns in 2011.

“I think the biggest thing here is we know this guy’s a winner,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said on Monday. “Obviously, he’s trying to change himself a little bit for the next level as far as playing the quarterback position from the throwing standpoint.”

Klein (6-5, 226) was rumored to be moving to tight end for the Texans, but he’ll play quarterback in their rookie mini-camp from May 10-12. Case Keenum is the only other Texans quarterback eligible to participate in the mini-camp.

Klein had almost as many rushing attempts (601) as passing attempts (604) in his Kansas State career. He has been working on his quarterback skills with Jake Plummer, a Denver Broncos signal-caller under Kubiak from 2003-05.

“We’re gonna bring him in here for the mini-camp and take a look at how far he’s come,” Kubiak said. “One thing about this guy is he’s been an overachiever his whole life, been very successful. We’re gonna give him a quick look here to see how much progress he’s made, and we’ll go from there.”

Klein will be one of five quarterbacks on the Texans' roster along with starter Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates, Keenum and Stephen McGee.
