Texans wrap up spring with final practice of mini-camp

Posted Jun 13, 2013

The Texans finished their spring practices with their final practice of mini-camp on Thursday at the Methodist Training Center.

The Texans finished their mandatory three-day mini-camp on Thursday at the Methodist Training Center. Their next practice will be on July 26, the first day of training camp.

Mini-camp provided young players a chance to shine as Texans coach Gary Kubiak rested most of his veteran starters. The Texans also had 10 OTA practices in May and June and a rookie mini-camp from May 10-12.

“I feel good about our offseason,” Kubiak said on Thursday. “Obviously, we’ve had a couple nicks, but it’s not nothing that anybody’s not gonna be back when we get ready to go. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got some injured players that have got a lot of ground to make up to make sure they’re ready to go when we come back.”

Left tackle Duane Brown had surgery last week to shave a bone spur in his ankle. Running back Arian Foster suffered a calf strain during the second week of OTAs and missed the final six practices. Rookie right tackle Brennan Williams injured his knee in rookie mini-camp and sat out the rest of the spring.

Brown, Foster, Williams, linebacker Brian Cushing (knee) and defensive end Tim Jamison (Achilles) are all expected to be ready for the first day of training camp.

“Listening to our trainers, there’s no doubt that I think everybody’s gonna be ready to go except for (DeVier) Posey as of right now,” Kubiak said. “But we’ll have to see. We’ve got a month.”

Kubiak is pleased with the progress of the Texans' top two draft picks, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and safety D.J. Swearinger. Both players got a chance to work with the first team throughout the spring, particularly during this week’s mini-camp.

“I think our young guys are further along than we’ve had ‘em since I’ve been here, and that was a point of emphasis because obviously, we’re trying to catch a DeAndre up, trying to catch a D.J. up,” Kubiak said. “I think these guys are probably in as good a position as our young players have been as far as competing and pushing some of our older guys, so I think it’s been good. (It’s) time for them to get away from us but not get away from their work and get ready to go.”
