Tom Savage is "hungry" to learn

Posted Jun 12, 2014

QB coach George Godsey spoke Thursday about the progression of rookie Tom Savage.

He may not be ready, but he's willing and able.

On top of that, Tom Savage is going above and beyond.

"He’s a hungry young man," quarterbacks coach George Godsey said of the rookie signal caller. "He wants to come in on the weekends and learn, too. I think that is the most important ingredient for a young quarterback.”

Savage was the Texans' fourth-round selection in last month's draft, and he's sturggling a bit. But that's a good thing, and a necessity in the eyes of his position coach.

"We’re putting him in difficult situations, and if he does make the mistake, we slow it down on tape, slow it down in the meeting room and then give him the same situation the next day," Godsey said. "Tom has done a good job of trying to handle those things the following day throughout the nine days of practice.”

Savage, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates are all competing at the quarterback position. The three veterans had a bit of a head start on the former Pitt Panther, and Godsey said the Texans aren't coddling Savage.

"We’re not holding much back from him either," Godsey said. "I’m going to coach him hard and Coach O’Brien is going to coach him hard and the rest of the coaches are, too."

Friday is the final day of OTAs, and the team will conduct a three-day minicamp next week. After that, late July's training camp will be the next time Savage and the Texans will practice together.
