Tom Savage razor-sharp in win over Patriots

Posted Aug 19, 2017

QB Tom Savage was razor-sharp during Saturday's win over the Patriots.

Tom Savage was sharp on Saturday night.

He was sharp at the end of his time in the preseason opener at Carolina.

16-of-17 with a touchdown pass sharp, in that span.

Savage and the Texans beat the Patriots at NRG Stadium, and the fourth-year quarterback completed eight of his nine passes for 98 yards. He also was perfect on the final eight attempts against the Panthers. Against New England, Savage found Jaelen Strong in the back of the end zone for a 2-yard scoring strike late in the first quarter.

“Yeah, I’m really, really comfortable with this offense," Savage told John Harris of Texans Radio during a 4th quarter interview. "We have a lot of talent out there and a lot of the guys are making some big plays for me and it’s been awesome.”

Savage started the game and guided the Texans on an eight-play drive that stalled at the New England eight-yard line. But the next possession, which ended in the touchdown pass to Strong, saw him engineer an 11-play march that went 58 yards and burned nearly seven minutes off the clock.

"Offensively, we want to get out there that first drive and score a touchdown," Savage said. "But we got the ball back down there and we punched it in and that’s all we can ask for.”

The two drives were all head coach Bill O'Brien needed to see on Saturday, as he inserted Deshaun Watson on the team's next series.

"We moved the ball when he was in there," O'Brien said. "He threw the ball accurately. Went to the right people. Like I said all along: he's got good command of what we're doing."

Savage and the Texans will practice on Monday morning at the Houston Methodist Training Center.
