Tuesday a happy return for Xavier Su'a-Filo

Posted Jun 17, 2014

Offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo returned to Houston Tuesday after missing OTAs because of UCLA's quarters system.

Even though he missed organized team activities (OTAs), Xavier Su'a-Filo stayed abreast of what the Texans offensive linemen were doing.

"Luckily I had an iPad, so I was able to keep up with the playbook," Su'a-Filo said. "But it was only mental reps, and actually getting out there and doing physical reps, was trying to catch up and do the best that I can.

The offensive lineman was the team's second round selection in last month's draft. After taking part in the rookie minicamp, he missed all of OTAs because UCLA was in the midst of the quarter system. He couldn't practice with the team because of that, so

"I wanted to just get back here as fast as I could," Su'a-Filo said. "I'm glad I finally am here."

Su'a-Filo split the last month or so between California and Utah, and said he called offensive line coach Paul Dunn whenever he had questions on the playbook. According to head coach Bill O'Brien, Su'a-Filo's prepwork was evident.

"I think just watching him today you could tell that he had done some studying on his own while away," O'Brien said. "I think that is a good sign, and he’s got to continue to do that.”

Su'a-Filo played left tackle last season for the Bruins. He'll likely compete for the left guard spot with the Texans. But he, O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith have all talked about his versatility, and ability to play multiple positions on the offensive line.
