Wade Phillips named interim head coach

Posted Nov 6, 2013

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is named interim head coach for Gary Kubiak.

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was named interim head coach for Gary Kubiak who was released from Houston Methodist Hospital on Tuesday. Phillips is 82-61 as a head coach in his career for Dallas, Buffalo, Denver with interim stops in Atlanta and New Orleans. Any wins or losses under Phillips will officially count towards Kubiak's overall record.

"I'm just keeping the seat warm," Phillips said. "It certainly changes game preparation this week, practice preparation, those kind of things. We are keeping the same schedule as far as when we meet, when we go to practice, all those things. I don't want to change their routine that way. We are changing a few things in practice that we think will help."

Kubiak has been in contact with Phillips this week. Making key decisions in Kubiak's absence will be part of Phillips' added responsibilities.

"He’s left it to me and he said do what you think," Phillips said. "I appreciate him and I appreciate the McNair’s having the confidence enough in me to at least take over for a short amount of time.”

Kubiak, who is in his eighth year with the Texans, experienced a transient ischemic attack (TIA) during Sunday's game against Indianapolis. While he is expected to make a full recovery, the exact date of his return is still unknown.
