Wade Phillips to serve as interim head coach

Posted Dec 6, 2013

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will be the interim head coach for the Texans' final three games of 2013.

With head coach Gary Kubiak's firing on Friday, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will serve as the interim head coach, according to Texans' chairman and CEO.

Phillips will also be a candidate to fill the vacancy on a full-time basis, McNair said.

"We’ll interview Wade and give him an opportunity to interview for the position," McNair said. "He’s got an outstanding record and he’s a fine coach. We’ll be interviewing him and we’ll be interviewing a number of other people.”

The 66-year old Texas native has a career record of 82-61 (.573) as a head coach for six different franchises. He was the interim head coach earlier this season at Arizona and against Oakland, while Kubiak recuperated from a mini-stroke.

General manager Rick Smiths said Phillips will be a key part of the evaulation process taking place for the rest of the regular season.

"I’m confident that Wade will have our team prepared and we’ll continue to evaluate every player, every coach, every process," Smith said.

Phillips was the Dallas Cowboys' head coach from 2007 to the middle of 2010. He's also been the head coach in Denver and Buffalo. The last time he served as an interim head coach was for the Atlanta Falcons for three games in 2003. He was the interim head coach of the New Orleans Saints for the last four games of the 1985 campaign.

He's coached a 16-game season eight times. In six of those years, his teams won nine or more games. His 2007 Dallas squad went 13-3. In 2009 the Cowboys were 11-5 and beat the Eagles in the Divisional round of the playoffs, before falling on the road to Minnesota.
