What if the Texans had drafted like...Todd McShay?

Posted Feb 10, 2016

If the Texans had drafted like ESPN's Todd McShay, they'd have some of the same players, but missed on some others.

The Mock Draft season is that perfect sweet spot.

It's right between the end of winter through the beginning and middle of spring.

Each week, numerous experts release their latest Mock Draft, spawning reactionary Tweets and sports talk radio segments...and web articles like this.

A few weeks ago, we looked back at the past few mock drafts of ESPN's Mel Kiper, Junior.

Now it's time to check what his counterpart at the Worldwide Leader has done with Houston.

Todd McShay most recently had the Texans taking Louisiana Tech defensive tackle Vernon Butler at #22 in this year's go-round.

But what about his past predictions for Houston?

Below are the last five McShay picks for the Texans, compared to the players they actually chose.

2015 #16 CB Kevin Johnson, Wake Forest #16 CB Kevin Johnson, Wake Forest
2014 #1 OLB Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina #1 OLB Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina
2013 #27 WR Justin Hunter, Tennessee #27 WR DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson
2012 #26 WR Kendall Wright, Baylor #27 OLB Whitney Mercilus, Illinois
2011 #11 CB Patrick Peterson, LSU #11 DE J.J. Watt

2015: McShay was one of the few who accurately had the Texans taking Johnson. As a rookie, Johnson played in every game and started 10 times. He notched 52 tackles and picked off a pass. He helped the pass defense allow the third-fewest yards per game.

2014: He was on the money in 2014 as well, but very few had the Texans taking anyone other than the eventual first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney.

The outside linebacker battled back from knee microfracture surgery, played in 13 games and was voted by his teammates as the franchise's Ed Block Courage Award Winner.

2013: A wide receiver was McShay's choice, but he was off on the name. Instead of DeAndre Hopkins, who's blossomed into a Pro Bowler, McShay tabbed the Texans with Justin Hunter. The former Tennessee Volunteer went to the Titans in the second round that year.

In three seasons in Nashville have seen Hunter catch a combined 68 passes for 1,116 yards and eight scores.

That same span has seen Hopkins pull in 239 catches for 3,533 yards and 19 touchdowns.

2012: McShay, like a few other experts, had the Texans selecting Baylor's Kendall Wright in 2012. He was long-gone, though, by the time Houston picked Whitney Mercilus at 26th overall. The Titans took Wright six spots ahead the Texans.

Wright's averaged 63 catches, 707 yards and four touchdowns in his four seasons with Tennessee. In 2013, he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark, catching 94 passes for 1,079 yards.

Mercilus, meanwhile, recorded a 12-sack season in 2015 and also added 14 tackles for a loss. He had six, seven and five sacks, respectively, in his first three seasons.

2011: Patrick Peterson would've been a Houston Texan if McShay had been right in 2011. In a way, McShay was correct. Texans general manager Rick Smith has frequently told the story of how Houston wanted to trade up to get the former LSU cornerback, but the Cardinals nabbed him instead with the fifth overall pick in 2011.

Peterson has gone to the Pro Bowl every year he's played in the NFL. He's a force at cornerback, and has been an excellent punt returner.

The Texans instead took defensive end J.J. Watt in 2011.

On Saturday night he was named the AP Defensive Player of the Year for the third time in his career.

That pick worked out splendidly for Smith and the Texans.
