What's next for Kevin Johnson?

Posted Jan 19, 2017

Kevin Johnson discusses his plans for the offseason and his timetable for return.

For Kevin Johnson, sitting out for the 2016 season made him even more determined to come back stronger than ever. The second-year cornerback is working on making a full recovery in time for organized team activities (OTAs) this spring.

“Training, working hard, just training all offseason,” Johnson said Monday. “Getting ready for OTAs and all those type of things. Rehab. Getting stronger physically. Just basically trying to do anything I can to get better.”

After undergoing surgery for a season-ending foot injury in October, Johnson was still in a walking boot as players cleaned out their lockers on Monday. The 2015 first-round draft pick will return to a defense that finished the 2016 regular season No. 1 in the league, allowing just 301.3 total net yards per game and finishing second in passing yards allowed per game (201.6).

“I think we got some great young players on the team and some great veterans,” Johnson said “I think it’s a great mix of just youth and experience and I think we have a lot of growth to keep growing as a defense and it’s exciting.”

Johnson, who saw action in six games last season, posted a career-high 10 tackles (nine solo), including his first tackle for loss of the season, and one pass defensed in his final game played against Indianapolis on Oct. 16. He finished the 2016 season with 21 tackles (18 solo), one tackle for loss, three quarterback hits, and one fumble recovery.
