Youth coaches take part in Player Safety Clinic

Posted Jun 16, 2014

On Saturday, 70 local-area youth football coaches took part in the Player Safety Coaches Clinic at the Houston Texans YMCA.

The Houston Texans strongly support player safety in the game of football, especially when it comes to local youth leagues. On Saturday, that campaign was further enriched as 70 Houston-area youth football coaches took part in the Player Safety Coaches Clinic at the Houston Texans YMCA.

During the event, certified Master Trainers educated participants in the content areas of Heads Up Football, the comprehensive youth football membership program that aims at further strengthening youth player safety. The areas of training included concussion awareness, heat and hydration, equipment fitting, and Heads Up tackling. Each coach who completed the training became certified as a player safety coach for their respective league.

Coach Greg McCaig of Cypress Creek High School, who is a member of the first class of Master Trainers, viewed the event as an overwhelming success.

“The turnout was fantastic; we were at capacity and probably a few more,” McCaig said. “The coaches were able to learn a great deal, and I think anytime that we can improve our game and preserve what it stands for, we’re better off. It’s always good for like-minded coaches to get together and share Ideas and have a real positive conversation about how to continue to improve this game.”

McCaig has over 30 years of experience in the game as both a coach and player. For him, the Heads Up Football initiative supported by USA Football and the NFL is in the best interest of the sport.

“I think the game of football is under attack, and I think USA Football and Heads Up Football in its efforts to teach specifically youth coaches a different way of playing and tackling is gonna do nothing but help protect the game that we love.

“In my opinion, it’s the best game out there that teaches more about life than anything.”
