SAN FRANCISCO – Running back Arian Foster left the first quarter of the Texans’ preseason game against the 49ers with a left hamstring injury and did not return. His status for the regular-season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 11 is uncertain.

Foster missed the Texans’ first preseason game with an injury to the same hamstring. He left on Saturday night after a nine-yard carry with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter.

“Arian kind of tweaked his hamstring again, the one he’s been having a little bit of trouble with in camp,” Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said. “We have 15 days, so we’ll just keep our fingers crossed that he recovers. We don’t think it’s anything worse than what we were dealing with before.”

Foster isn't sure if he'll be ready for Week 1.

"I can't tell you right now, but I'm hopeful," he said in the locker room after the game. "I'm going to work towards it."

The league leader in rushing yards and touchdowns in 2010, Foster said that he re-aggravated his hamstring while making a cut.

“It’s frustrating,” he said. “It’s just part of life. (It's a) roller coaster ride, so you’ve gotta remain even-keeled.

“It wasn’t a pop or anything like that. It was just a re-aggravation of what I already had, so I'll probably bounce back quicker than I did last time.”

Kubiak said that the colder weather at Candlestick Park may have had something to do with Foster's injury.

"Y’all know how cool it was out there in the night," Kubiak said. "We’ve been working with 100-degree heat for a month, so for us it was like a shock. I don’t think he ever really got loose and got going. I’m just sitting here hoping that it was kind of what we were dealing with before and he’ll be OK for opening day.”

Foster finished the game with eight carries for 38 yards and one catch for 12 yards. Backup Derrick Ward finished with six carries for 13 yards, one touchdown and one lost fumble. Second-year running back Ben Tate had 11 carries for 52 yards and two catches for 14 yards. Chris Ogbonnaya added eight carries for 48 yards.
