Will Lawing is in his first season as offensive assistant/offensive line with the Houston Texans after three years on the defensive side of the ball.

With Lawing serving as defensive quality control coach from 2014-16, the Texans defense ranked third in the NFL in net yards allowed per game (319.9) and net passing yards allowed per game (218.4). The team also ranked first in third-down defense (33.6%), fourth in opponent completion percentage (59.5) and sixth in points allowed per game (19.8).

Houston is coming off back-to-back AFC South division championships and has put together three straight winning seasons for the first time in franchise history. Houston’s 7-1 record at home and 5-1 record in the division in 2016 both tied franchise records. The team also advanced to the AFC Divisional Round for the first time since 2012.

The Texans finished last season with the NFL’s top-ranked defense for the first time in franchise history, surrendering an average of only 301.3 total net yards per game. They also gave up the fewest first downs (17.0) and second-fewest net passing yards (201.6) per game. From Weeks 8-17, Houston allowed an average of 71.9 net rushing yards per game and opponents only scored three rushing touchdowns during that span, both of which led the league.

Houston finished the 2015 season ranked third in net yards (310.2) and net passing yards (210.4) allowed per game, fifth in opponent completion percentage (59.0) and seventh in points allowed per game (19.6). The Texans also set franchise single-season records for sacks (45) and opponent third-down percentage (28.5) in 2015. That percentage led the league in 2015 and was the lowest mark by any NFL team since the 2003 Tennessee Titans (27.7).

The Texans won their first AFC South crown since 2012 and only allowed six points or less five times in 2015, which led the NFL and is tied for the most such games in a season since the 1991 New Orleans Saints (six times). On the season, the Texans didn’t allow the opposing team to score a touchdown in four of their games.

In 2014, the Texans led the NFL in takeaways with a franchise-record 34 and became just the third team in the last 20 years to lead the league in takeaways after finishing last the previous season. They also led the NFL with 35 points scored against opposing offenses and set a franchise record with five defensive touchdowns.

Lawing came to Houston from Penn State, where he served as a graduate assistant under Head Coach Bill O’Brien for the 2013 season.

Prior to Penn State, Lawing spent four seasons with Juniata College as the program’s offensive coordinator (2011-12), passing game coordinator (2010) and tight ends coach (2009). In addition to his coaching duties, Lawing was also Juniata’s recruiting coordinator.

A 2008 graduate of the University of North Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science, Lawing was a four-year member of the UNC football team.
