Breakfast: Facing the NFL's Top 100

One of my favorites series on television is the NFL Network's Top 100 Countdown. It's list television and I'm a huge sucker for lists of any kind. NFL Network has been counting down the top 100 players in the league as voted on by the players.

The players vote on their top 20 or 25 players and from that list is compiled a top 100 for the entire NFL. The Network reveals ten players each week, counting down to No. 1 in early July. So far, a total of 40 players have been revealed thus far. No Texans have been revealed yet, but what struck me was how many players in the top 100 are ones that the Texans played against in 2015 or will play in 2016.

Of the 40 players revealed, the Texans faced in 2015, or will face in 2016, nearly 70% of those. As I've watched the series week by week, I couldn't help but think "wow, the Texans faced him and they'll face him and that guy, too." With 60 players still to unveil, it's possible that the Texans will face over 50% of the entire list. A couple more Jaguars and one or two Colts are guaranteed to be on the list, not to mention two Texans, at a minimum.

Here are the players the Texans will face in 2016 and each player's spot on the Top 100. ** indicates that the Texans faced them last year too.

  1. QB Derek Carr, Raiders
  2. DT Mike Daniels, Packers
    **93. WR Jeremy Maclin, Chiefs
  3. QB Andrew Luck, Colts (hurt and missed both matchups last year)
    *91. TE Travis Kelce, Chiefs
    89. WR Allen Hurns, Jaguars
  4. WR Julian Edelman, Patriots (hurt and missed matchup last year)
    *84. OLB Tamba Hali, Chiefs
    83. LB Telvin Smith, Jaguars
    *82. TE Delanie Walker, Titans
    81. QB Alex Smith, Chiefs *
    80. LB Derrick Johnson, Chiefs
    78. RB Chris Ivory, Jaguars (formerly Jets)
  5. DT Linval Joseph, Vikings
    **75. RB Jamaal Charles, Chiefs
  6. WR Emmanuel Sanders, Broncos
  7. S Harrison Smith, Vikings
    **70. DE Carlos Dunlap, Bengals
  8. S T.J. Ward, Broncos
    *67. T Andrew Whitworth, Bengals
    65. CB Marcus Peters, Chiefs
  9. WR Demaryius Thomas, Broncos

Here are the players the Texans faced in 2015, but won't meet again (barring a trade, re-signing or playoff matchup)

  1. WR Jarvis Landry, Dolphins
  2. OG Richie Incognito, Bills
  3. WR Sammy Watkins, Bills
  4. RB Jonathan Stewart, Panthers
  5. C Ryan Kalil, Panthers
  6. RB LeSean McCoy, Bills
  7. S Reshad Jones, Dolphins
  8. DT Gerald McCoy, Bucs

There are at least 15 players I can think of off the top of my head that fit into either category, so 50% might be a conservative number when the Top 100 finishes at No. 1 later this summer.
