Demaryius Thomas has been watching Deshaun Watson for years.
Once Watson entered the NFL, the Thomas even met the young quarterback who helped lead his team to the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship.
“I was a big fan of his at Clemson for sure,” Thomas said. “I was out here a couple times in the offseason and we hung out a couple times and we had conversations, small little conversations.”
After the Texans traded for the veteran wide receiver on Oct. 30, both Watson and Thomas began immediately working on their chemistry. Now heading into their second game together, Watson feels the two have made good progress despite the short amount of time since Thomas arrived in Houston.
“It’s been good,” Watson said. “Like I said before, we’ve known each other before, so as far as hanging out and just talking ball, we’ve done that before. Now, being on the same team and having more time, especially, the past bye week of getting together and getting on the same page, it’s been good.”
Thomas, now in his ninth NFL season, has won a Super Bowl and been named to five Pro Bowls. The former Denver Bronco has caught passes from a number of quarterbacks, including Peyton Manning. Seeing Watson’s command of the offense firsthand has impressed him so far.
“I didn’t know it was his second year,” Thomas said, jokingly. “The main thing is how he takes control of the huddle. I played with a couple of young guys that did take control of the huddle, and nothing against those guys, it’s just that (Watson) does it a different way.”
In Houston’s 19-17 win in Denver, Thomas caught three passes for 61 yards in his debut as a Texan.
The (6-3) Texans will travel to Washington in Week 11. Kickoff is set for 12 noon CT on CBS and SportsRadio 610.
