Twelve years ago, Deann Watson received a Habitat for Humanity home for herself and her four children in Gainesville, Georgia. Deshaun Watson recalls his childhood home with fond memories.
“It was just a fresh start for us, kind of build our own foundation in a good environment, a good neighborhood and it changed everyone’s life and it made me motivated to fulfill my dreams,” Watson said. “It helped me get to where I am today and I’m thankful for that.”
Watson and his family lived in an impoverished area of town in government housing before his mother began the one-and-a-half year process to earn the home from Habitat For Humanity.
Now entering his third NFL season, the Texans starting quarterback wanted to surprise his mom with a makeover of her kitchen and living room.
"I wanted to give my mom everything she wants,” Watson said. “This has been a solid home for us for 12 years. It needs a touch-up, but for my mom it will be more than a touch-up. I'm a mama's boy, so she gets whatever she wants."
Watson worked with design duo from the My Houzz video series to brainstorm ideas and make selections. Over the course of a few weeks, the team installed a new fireplace, replaced cabinets, purchased new appliances and upgraded the floors to hardwoods, among other updates. Watson and his aunt Sonia then revealed the newly renovated home to his mother, who loved the results.
“My mom is amazing,” Watson said. “She was my rock growing up, always giving 100 percent and always so supportive. Renovating her house means a lot to me.”
