The job is never finished.
Nearly every business can claim this, and the Texans are no different.
Even though the NFL Draft came and went just over a week ago, general manager Brian Gaine isn't done adding and subtracting pieces from Houston's roster. Gaine spoke with the media before Monday's Houston Texans Charity Golf Classic, and explained as much.
"We're always trying to improve the team when the opportunity arises," Gaine said. "We're always contingency planning, so throughout the course of the season I know there's windows and places where we upgrade the roster and address the roster in free agency and the draft."
The Texans added seven players through the 2019 NFL Draft, and will soon announce the nearly two-dozen undrafted free agent rookies. They've also signed veteran help in the secondary in the form of safeties Tashaun Gipson and Jahleel Addae, and cornerbacks Bradley Roby and Briean Boddy-Calhoun. Left tackle Matt Kalil joined tight end Darren Fells as free agents signings on offense. Gaine, though, emphasized Monday that there's still plenty of time to tweak the makeup of the locker room.
"There isn't a day that goes by where we're not thinking about other ways to improve the roster," Gaine said. "So it's a constant process, 24-seven, 365 days a year. If we see an opportunity to upgrade or improve the roster, we'll do that."
For example, from May 1 of last year until the day rosters were trimmed from 90 to 53 players, the Texans added six players and subtracted 11. They signed free agents, claimed players off waivers, and released and waived players from their own roster. The summer months routinely see Houston make moves, and this summer should be no different.
