The Texans selected running back Tyler Ervin (5-10, 192) from San Jose State in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.
"He is a very versatile player, a young man that has some return ability, but actually dual-return ability in the sense that he could do some punts and maybe even kickoff, so he'll be in that mix of guys that will be competing for that as well," general manager Rick Smith said Saturday.
In 2015, Ervin was named first-team All-Mountain West running back. He set the San Hose State single-season shcool records for rushing yards (1,601) and all-purpose running yardage (2,637). Ervin also contributed on special teams, returning seven punts for 105 yards and one touchdown as well was adding 25 kickoff returns for 597 yards, averaging 23.88 yards per attempt.
"He's a dynamic football player," Smith said. "Those stats are impressive. For a smaller stature guy, he's not a little guy. He doesn't have a lot of height, but he's a tough, durable football player, he does have good ball security. With his skill set and his versatility, there are a lot of things we can do with the young man."
The Texans also moved up in the first and second rounds, adding two players out of Notre Dame. Houston drafted wide receiver Will Fuller with the No. 21 overall pick and center Nick Martin 50th overall. The Texans selected wide receiver Braxton Miller in the third round.
