I wish he took that one to the crib. That punt return he had? He was one player away from taking that to the house. Justin Reid on Tremon Smith's 20-yard punt return vs. Packers.
The Houston Texans held a Training Camp afternoon practice presented by Xfinity on Monday at the Houston Methodist Training Center. After storm clouds and thunder made an appearance during warmups, the team quickly moved inside the bubble for the remainder of practice.
Practice seemed energetic, perhaps due to the lingering effects of Saturday's preseason win or from being indoors during an August day in Houston or maybe a combination of both.
Head coach David Culley addressed the media before practice. The first round of roster cuts will take place by Tuesday's deadline, when teams must get down to 85 players. The Texans announced that they have waived second-year wide receiver Isaiah Coulter and fourth-year running back Dontrell Hilliard, who played two games for Houston in 2020.
The Texans also traded special teams standout Keion Crossen to the New York Giants.
"Everything we do, we feel like is for the best for the football team," Culley said. "The situation came up where we could make the move that we did and we did and we felt like that was the best for what we needed at this time."
In other transactions, the Reserve/COVID-19 list will likely clear most of its players this week. Currently, Bradley Roby and three offensive linemen, Roderick Johnson, Tytus Howard and Laremy Tunsil are on the list.
"We'll get some guys back this week," Culley said. "There's still a couple of days for those guys that have been out right now but they will be back in practice this week."
Tunsil tested positive and will be out "a little bit longer," per Culley.
Roby, placed on the COVID-19 list on Wednesday, Aug. 11, was back at practice Monday.
Culley also expects more players to participate the second preseason game at Dallas this week.
"We had a bunch of guys that didn't play in this first one that we held out," Culley said. "Hopefully, we get those guys some playing time and some guys that didn't play will get to play a little bit more."
Justin Reid didn't play but says he actually prefers the 4-3 scheme because it's more downhill and attack mode of playing. His brother Eric Reid played in a similar system in 2013 and he taught Justin some of the nuances of playing in it.
Reid feels Tremon Smith's man coverage is "really good" and was impressed with his play Saturday.
Smith said he, Reid and Lonnie Johnson trained together this offseason. Smith also played for Frank Ross last year on special teams when the two were with the Indianapolis Colts.
Even though it was a shirts and shorts type of practice, there were some notable plays from Monday's practice.
In team drills, Davis Mills threw a couple of deep passes for completions to Nico Collins and Keke Coutee.
Defensive back Terrence Brooks had a nice pass breakup in coverage.
Collins later made another big catch, this time off a throw from Tyrod Taylor.
Tremon Smith, who had an interception in preseason action against the Packers, tipped a pass in practice. The pass smoothly bounced into Chris Moore's hands though for a completion.
Lonnie Johnson picked off a pass and kept his feet in bounds as he was making the play. Johnson punted the ball afterwards in celebration.
The Texans will return for another practice Tuesday morning at the Houston Methodist Training Center. They will play the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday in their second preseason game. Kickoff from AT&T Stadium is set for 7 p.m. CDT on ABC-13, SportsRadio 610 and HoustonTexans.com.
