Akeem Hunt scores twice, helps ignite Texans

RB Akeem Hunt scored twice in Thursday's win over the Cowboys.

Akeem Hunt wanted to focus on the “little details” this offseason.
 

That attention to detail served the running back well over the course of the four preseason games, as he wound up leading the team in touchdowns with three. Two of those scores came in Thursday evening’s win over the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
 

“I just wanted to focus on the little details because this offense is very complex,” Hunt said. “I wanted to show the coaches I could understand this offense and play multiple roles.”
 

Hunt plowed in for a 3-yard score in the second quarter, and caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tom Savage in the third quarter. He finished with 44 rushing yards on 12 carries and caught four passes for 27 yards.
 

“I think he did a heck of a job,” Savage said. “I know he’s one of the most passionate guys out there, always talking in the huddle, and he’s just a good guy to have on the team.”
 

Head coach Bill O’Brien said the second-year back out of Purdue is “very competitive” and a valuable part of the passing game as well.
 

“He loves to play,” O’Brien said. “He’s got really good speed. Good vision. Good receiver out of the backfield.”
 

Hunt’s speed is a big asset, according to quarterback Brandon Weeden.
 

“When you have speed like that, you kind of hold your breath,” Weeden said. “He’s got a different gear than a lot of other guys. If you can get him in space, you can get the ball in his hands and let him do his thing and he’s dangerous.”
 

Hunt also returned a pair of kickoffs for 46 total yards. In all, he was happy he got a chance to touch the ball so many times on Thursday.
 

“It’s special,” Hunt said. “It was good that the coaches gave me an opportunity to show what I could do.”
 

The Texans will have the weekend off and resume practice on Monday afternoon.
