Joe Webb III friends w/ music star, many positions

Joe Webb, III is a quarterback...and a receiver...and a special teams standout.

The veteran wears many hats, and is excited to be in Houston. He's ready, willing and able to play wherever, and said he just wants to make the Texans better.

"I'm all for the team," Webb said. "Team first. Whatever the coaches need me to do, the quarterback role, the receiver role, the special teams role, I'm all about just making the guys around me better."

Webb spent last season in Buffalo, after three years in Carolina and three years before that in Minnesota. In his eight-year career, he's completed 56.6 percent of his passes for almost 900 yards, caught eight more for 61 yards, returned 18 kickoffs and notched 25 special teams tackles. Versatility is his strong suit.

"The first thing that was told to me was, 'The more you can do, the better,'" Webb said. "I came into the League drafted as a receiver by Minnesota. During rookie minicamp, they put me at quarterback. Then they changed me back over to receiver. Got to Carolina and played all four special teams while I was a backup quarterback. Played receiver, too. It's just been that way throughout my whole career."

But Webb identifies himself primarily as a quarterback, who just happens to be able to do a lot of other things.

"That's my natural position, quarterback," Webb said. "Everything else just grew on to me."

He's joined a quarterback room with Deshaun Watson as the starter, and reserves DeAndre Hopkins and Stephen Morris.

Webb is no stranger to NRG Stadium. Neither is an old college teammate of his, who's now a country music star.

Webb and Sam Hunt played football together at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The former was drafted in the 6th round by the Minnesota Vikings in 2010, while the latter tried out for the Chiefs in 2008 before moving on to music.

Webb started at quarterback for the Vikings in a 2012 preseason game at Houston. Hunt sang at NRG Stadium in a 2017 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo performance.

Hunt's success in music wasn't a surprise to Webb.

"I had a pretty good idea," Webb said. "He used to bring his guitar and play in the hotel. He was good. I was playing receiver and he was playing quarterback."

The Texans are hoping Webb will make sweet music in Houston...at whichever position he plays.
