T.J. Yates aiming for positives in 2017 finale

Posted Dec 27, 2017

QB T.J. Yates spoke Wednesday about what he needs to do to help the Texans win at Indianapolis this Sunday.

The 2017 season comes to a close Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium for the Texans, and quarterback T.J. Yates wants it to end with a win over the Colts.

Houston's lost five straight since a Week 11 win at home over the Cardinals. But in Indianapolis, they've won the last two meetings. Yates was a part of the franchise's first victory there in 2015.

“We were in the playoff hunt then and it was a good time for us and we were playing well," Yates said. "I know overall the team hasn’t done well up there in the past but the last couple years we have, so we’re trying to keep that going. It’s a new week, fresh start, last game of the year and this whole team’s going to attack this thing and try to go up there and get a win.”

Struggles offensively have seen the Texans score a combined 13 points the last two games, and quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan explained his goals for Yates and the offense in the runup towards Sunday.

"I’ve got to coach better, we’ve all got to work together on it and get it going in the right direction," Ryan said. "But you want to see him finish on a positive note and do some good things and move the offense and score some points."

Yates and the Texans will practice on Thursday and Friday, and then leave for Indianapolis on Sunday. Despite the struggles, he's remained optimistic.

"We’re going to go back to work and take advantage of the opportunity in front of us and go out and work this week," Yates said. "We’re going to do better this week.”

Kickoff is at noon CT in Indianapolis.
